How late fees work for landlords

Late fees are easier to explain when the due date, grace period, and posting day are all spelled out before the month starts.

The most common source of confusion is not the fee amount. It is the timing. Landlords need to know when rent is due, how many grace days apply, and on what day the rent should actually be treated as late.

Once that rule is set, the fee should post into the same ledger as rent and payments so both sides can see the full picture without arguments about what changed.

When does rent become late after a grace period?

If rent is due on the 1st and there is a 5-day grace period, it is late after the 6th and the late fee would post on the 7th.
